Cycle routes added to Google Maps

30th August 2012
For those of you who cycle and are looking for routes that avoid very busy roads, then the routes produced on the desktop and mobile version could be a good starting point.

European countries included in the mapping are: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and of course the UK.

Turn-by-turn, voice-guided biking navigation is included in the Google Maps for Android with Navigation (Beta) version.

Google claims that it now has more than 330,000 miles of green biking lines in Google Maps which is welcome news to those of us that battle motorists on a daily basis.

Where Map Maker and biking directions are both available, riders can add bike trails, cycle lanes and suggested routes to Google Maps, all of which helps to create a more comprehensive map for cyclists - Google has posted a useful 'how to guide' to this feature on You Tube.

If you are suitably inspired to get back on your bike have at look at the advice published by British Cycling: 'How to Commute by Bike'.
